Over the past five years, since the foundation became the event’s beneficiary, $40,000-plus has been raised from sponsorships and entry fees. Falmouth Education Foundation was founded in 2004. Its mission is “to support and enhance educational excellence in the Falmouth Public Schools by awarding annual grants for innovative programs that are outside the district's operating budget.” The founders’ goal was “to provide educators the knowledge, training and materials necessary to remain at the forefront of educational excellence, and to ensure that budgetary constraints would not diminish the opportunity for innovation in our schools.” This year the foundation helped to fund 39 projects for a total of almost $100,000. Its biggest fundraiser is the annual Winter Gala, which will be held next year on Saturday, March 4, at Coonamessett Inn. More than 400 runners from nine states registered for this year’s run/walk. The principal race sponsors are The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Sports Medicine, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub and Slade Mortgage. Contributing sponsors are Soft as a Grape, Marathon Sports, Jack in the Beanstalk and Anytime Fitness. The foundation’s website is www.FalmouthEducationFnd.org. Records Shattered Robert DeLeo of Brookline shattered the course record at the Sixth Annual Falmouth Flag Day 5K on June 12 and ran one of the fastest 3.1-milers ever on Cape Cod. According to Bob Fitzgerald of New England Runner, "Irish Olympian Marie Davenport ran 15:59 at one of the 'Women Running Wild' 5Ks in Osterville years ago, but 16:10 is certainly one of the fastest south of the Sagamore and Bourne bridges for sure!" DeLeo decided to run late last week and made the trip over the bridge worthwhile, scorching the waterfront route out and back from Falmouth Heights along Vineyard Sound under a picturesque sky and into a stiff breeze off the water for the last mile. His time of 16:10.8, a 5:13-per-mile pace, bettered the previous record of 16:29.4 set by Charlie Marquardt of Pasadena, Calif., in 2011. DeLeo’s victory was never in doubt, as he pulled away early from runner-up Matthew Herman of Brookline and won by 57 seconds. “This was a really nice race on a beautiful course,” said DeLeo after the awards ceremony. “I will spread the word about it back in the Boston area and will plan on returning in 2017.” Preisig, though a Falmouth resident, had never run the race before, and was glad she did. Her time of 19:47.1 set a master’s record and was one of the fastest women’s time since the race was founded in 2011 by former Falmouth Road Race co-directors Kathy and Rich Sherman and race staffer Jo-Ann Leaf. A former national champion in duathlon and triathlon, Preisig has represented the U.S. as an age group team member at several Triathlon World Championships, including a second place finish, and 10th in the 5,000 meters at the U.S.A. Track and Field outdoor championships. Another highlight of the race was a fourth-place overall finish by 13-year-old Caleb Gartner in 18:12.3. He was almost four minutes ahead of the second place runner in his division. Robert DeLeo cruises to victory and a course record. Susie Borowski photos Anne Preisig of Falmouth wins in 19:47. More than 40 designs were submitted by students at the high school. Thank you Max, and all the students who participated, and to Mr. Holladay and Ms. Baker, the art teachers who helped us with the contest. What a beautiful day for runners and walkers of all ages! Congratulations to everyone who completed the race. We had a record turnout of more than 500 including the children's sprints and we raised more than $13,000 for Falmouth Education Foundation.
